Frequently Asked Questions:
- Why doesn't the RockBox have a rechargeable battery?
- A few reasons:
- With a permanently installed rechargeable battery, if it runs out of power you have to plug it in for rechage and can't use it for hours until its charged again. This isn't very easy to do while racing on a boat. With the RockBox, you simply install a new set of batteries and go.
- If a permanetly installed rechargeable battery dies you must either purchase an entire new unit or send it back to the manufacturer for service. With the RockBox, you simply install a new set of batteries and go.
- If you do want rechargeable batteries in your RockBox, it is fully compatible with any rechargeable AA sized battery. You can use rechargealbe batteries, and still have the option of using standard alkaline batteries if they run out at an inoportune moment, like right before a race.
- What is battery life for the RockBox?
- Does the RockBox have a count down timer?
- Yes, and it is adjustable once the timer has started, in case you start the timer on the wrong signal.
- Does the RockBox have a function to tell me how far I am from the starting line?
- Yes, it will show the distance in feet, meters, or boat lengths, and its adjustable while its running. Simply use the remote to add or subract distance, so you don't have to set the marks again.
- Can I connect my RockBox to a PC to download logged data?
- Yes, every RockBox comes with RockBox Commander PC software. This allows you to download your track and view it in Google Earth and similar programs. The data is saved in two formats, .gpx for import into Google Earth, and also as a comma separated text file, for import in a spreadsheet. The data saved is: speed, VMG, heading, latitude, longitude, time and date.
- Is the RockBox waterproof?
- That depends on what is meant by waterproof, the official definition varies by country. For the RockBox we have validated it to international standards IP67 and NEMA 4X. You can read about the standards here. Generally, what this means is sailing = OK, scuba diving with your RockBox = not OK.
- Can I upgrade my RockBox as new functions are developed?
- Yes, simply connect your RockBox to a PC with the supplied USB cable and use the included RockBox Commander software to load new firmware onto the RockBox.
- What happens if I lose the remote control?
- You can still use your RockBox by setting it to the function you want using the internal buttons. A new remote can be ordered from us to replace your old one.
- If someone else nearby has a RockBox, will the remote controls interfere with each other?
- No, each remote has its own code and only talks to the RockBox it came with.
- How big is the RockBox?
- I have a question about the RockBox that isn't answered here, who can I ask ?
